Meet Some Of Our Volunteers

Our volunteers are extremely important and without them we could not accomplish our goals.

Kelly C.

My name is Kelly Collins and I’m from Minneapolis. I got sober here in Milwaukee.

I came to Milwaukee being new to recovery and not knowing anyone. I went to sober living at 4D and they introduced me to the Alano Club.

My first meeting at the club was a turning point for me. I met people just like me; the club gave me a newfound hope.

My time volunteering at the Alano Club has had a huge impact on my recovery.

The club was my first service commitment and it’s been one of my biggest assets to my recovery.

Hearing other people’s stories while talking to them at the counter inspires me and I love being an ear for someone who comes in and is struggling or just wants to vent.

The relationships I have made through volunteering have showed me how fulfilling recovery can be and are a huge part of my happiness and success in recovery.

The Alano Club will always hold a special place in my heart, it’s one of my very favorite places to be!

Robert K.

Bob is a welder and cat dad who realized he was an alcoholic when he blacked out at his family Thanksgiving. After attending his first AA meeting at the Milwaukee Group, he began regularly attending meetings both there and at the alano club, and after taking his sponsor's advice to try service work found that it was the cornerstone of his recovery. He now regularly chairs meetings at the MG, volunteers at the alano club, and tries to be of service to other people in recover whenever he has the opportunity, and is happily 15 months sober.

(Bob has also been voted “Alano’s best dressed” 9 months and running.)

Erin E.

My name is Erin. After several attempts at getting sober over many years, I finally made my way to the Alano Club in the spring of 2023. I began attending meetings regularly and I am thrilled to say that the meetings and the people I met at them have kept me sober ever since. In September of 2023 I asked if there were any volunteer opportunities available and I started volunteering, by working behind the counter and chairing the occasional meeting. I also help out assisting with events, as needed.

Volunteering at the Alano Club has been incredibly rewarding. I have met so many interesting people and with each meeting I attend and each shift I volunteer, I am happy to say that I am on my way towards a lifetime of recovery.

Jeremy B.

My name is Jeremy, and I’m very good at being an alcoholic. I’m originally from Pennsylvania but found myself living in Wisconsin in 2022. My journey in sobriety began in 2019 (sobriety date: January 7th, 2023) when I lived in Indianapolis and found the doors of the Alano Club during the summer of 2023. Say hello anytime. I’m easy to spot because I’m usually the tallest guy in the room. Fun facts: 1) I’m a doctor of archaeology, and 2) I love Pearl Jam, but I don’t like their song “Jeremy.”.

The Milwaukee Alano Club relies on its staff of volunteers to keep our doors open and provide an atmosphere of recovery for all those who enter them. All of our volunteers and board members are unpaid and are vital to our cause.

A Second Home

The reasons our volunteers share their services are plentiful: love of the MKE Alano Club, wanting to do something positive, a strong sense of giving back and doing for others, or simply because it’s such a rewarding experience. Out of this a spirit of stewardship exists among our volunteers. Many of us see the MKE Alano Club as our second home, and our fellow volunteers as our family.

When the lives of our volunteers become full, we are honored to be a part of the transformation process. We are always sad to see them go but know that their new lives in recovery have only just begun! Hear from some volunteers who have moved on to bigger and better things!
