Meet Some Of Our Volunteers

Our volunteers are extremely important and without them we could not accomplish our goals.

Leroy D.

My name is Leroy Dungan and I’m from Leroy Alabama. I got sober here in Milwaukee on
November 3rd 2022.

I came to Milwaukee being not in recovery and not knowing anyone. I went to sober living at 3 Rivers and my good friend introduced me to The Alano Club.

My first meeting at the club was very scary for me. There was a lot going on and a lot of people there, I said I’d never come back due to being overwhelmed.
I started coming back after a couple months and started falling in love with the place slowly but surely.

I started volunteering when I was 3 months sober cleaning the club and stocking the back of the club and the basement, eventually I started working all day every Saturday open to close, and it has always been a major part of my recovery journey.

I eventually stopped my Saturday shifts and continued to be a shift fill in volunteer, Events Volunteer and Website Manager for The Alano Club

The relationships I have made through volunteering have showed me how fulfilling recovery can be and are a huge part of my happiness and success in recovery.

The Alano Club will always hold a special place in my heart, it’s my absolute favorite place to be!

Robert K.

Bob is a welder and cat dad who realized he was an alcoholic when he blacked out at his family Thanksgiving. After attending his first AA meeting at the Milwaukee Group, he began regularly attending meetings both there and at the alano club, and after taking his sponsor's advice to try service work found that it was the cornerstone of his recovery. He now regularly chairs meetings at the MG, volunteers at the alano club, and tries to be of service to other people in recover whenever he has the opportunity, and is happily 15 months sober.

(Bob has also been voted “Alano’s best dressed” 9 months and running.)

Jake M.

Hello my name is Jake, I’m 36 years old. I volunteer Wednesdays 10am-5pm and fill in when needed. Im also on the events committee. I've been coming to the Alano club since 2016 when it saved my life for the very 1st time and shown me a life of responsibility and acceptance as well as honesty can lead to a life of your dreams no matter what that looks like for each individual. For me, it has given me more than one chance at this life. After being clean for over 5 years, I thought I had it. I had everything I prayed so hard to get. But I lost balance when I lost my mother and soon found out I had a family the whole time I just needed to get back to them. So today, I never take a day for granted, and I treat the club for what it is. A life saver, a community creator. I take so much pride in the work I do around the club, especially the little projects. like the Aquarium, it looks like a lost cause or a costly endeavor. But instead, I stepped up. Put in time, effort and compassion, As it stands today brewing with life and color continuing to be a staple of the club and a favorite among the many people and children that make their way to the club. It brought me purpose and gave me a chance to be of service and give back life as the club did for me so many years ago. It took me to step away, just for a moment to realize The Alano Club is my home and where my true family joins together. Even if it's only 1 hour out of the day. It is a necessity to keep what I once thought of as something that could never be.

-Jake M.

Belle T.

Belle is one of the many wonderful volunteers at the Alano Club. She has recently began helping out, and has been in the rooms since 2023. Belle was born in the outskirts of Madison, Wisconsin, and grew up there until she relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her sober journey started there, and she has continued to thrive, while enjoying being with nature, drawing, and spending time with her two cats.

Jeremy B.

My name is Jeremy, and I’m very good at being an alcoholic. I’m originally from Pennsylvania but found myself living in Wisconsin in 2022. My journey in sobriety began in 2019 (sobriety date: January 7th, 2023) when I lived in Indianapolis and found the doors of the Alano Club during the summer of 2023. Say hello anytime. I’m easy to spot because I’m usually the tallest guy in the room. Fun facts: 1) I’m a doctor of archaeology, and 2) I love Pearl Jam, but I don’t like their song “Jeremy.”.

The Milwaukee Alano Club relies on its staff of volunteers to keep our doors open and provide an atmosphere of recovery for all those who enter them. All of our volunteers and board members are unpaid and are vital to our cause.

A Second Home

The reasons our volunteers share their services are plentiful: love of the MKE Alano Club, wanting to do something positive, a strong sense of giving back and doing for others, or simply because it’s such a rewarding experience. Out of this a spirit of stewardship exists among our volunteers. Many of us see the MKE Alano Club as our second home, and our fellow volunteers as our family.

When the lives of our volunteers become full, we are honored to be a part of the transformation process. We are always sad to see them go but know that their new lives in recovery have only just begun! Hear from some volunteers who have moved on to bigger and better things!
